When starting out in Fallout 76, you'll be asked to create a character. You'll choose the look, build and overall appearance of your character, and pose with it in photo mode. You'll also select a name, which will show up when you're playing the game. The thing is, once you've named your character, you can't change it. This isn't too important because everyone else in the game will actually see your Bethesda.net username instead anyway. If you want to change that name, you'll need to email support at Bethesda.net. You'll be told to choose four new usernames in order of preference then one will be added in.

An account's character name, also known as its display name, is the alternative name for a player's character that is displayed on all website features, including the game, on the forums and in the Hiscores. It is different from the player's username, which is used to log into these features - this cannot be changed.

As of 1 October 2009, members of either RuneScape or FunOrb are able to change their display name to something different from their username. This display name is the name which other players will see and know an account. A player's username will always remain the same, regardless of any changes made to the display name. To log into any website features (including the game), a user must enter his or her username, not the display name. Everyone's initial display name is the same as his or her username.

The ability to change display names is currently only available to members of either RuneScape or FunOrb. To change a display name, a player must visit the Account Management section of the RuneScape or FunOrb website and select 'Change your display name'. He or she can then choose a new display name for his or her character.

If a display name is seen to be offensive or deceptive, Jagex can remove the name, and replace it with a temporary name (a random set of numbers). The player will be forced to change the name before being able to log in. If a user repeatedly chooses offensive names, he or she will not have the ability to change his or her name for one year and will be assigned one by a Jagex Moderator.

Once a user has chosen a new display name, their old one will be reserved for an amount of time. The name will be reserved for at least 35 days with exact length depending on the time the original name was held. For the first 28 of these it isn't possible to change the display name without using a bond, so they've got at least a week to return to their old name if they wish to do so. Once these days have passed, the old display name will no longer be on hold and can be taken by others.

When a player changes their display name, an icon will appear to the left of the name on the Friends list of any player who has him or her added as a friend. By hovering their cursors over the icon, players can see the old name of an account, so as to avoid any confusion. A similar update has not been made for the Clan Chat. The blue icon will disappear once the players previous name becomes available, confirmed by Mod Grantham.

This is to free up names from inactive accounts for active users to be able to use for their account. Any players who choose to log into an inactive account that has had its name taken will be forced to change the name of the account before logging in.

A second batch of name releases were done starting on 13 March 2017, beginning with letter A. Unlike the previous time, no level requirement was made when taking the names. Additionally, character names of some banned accounts have been released, except for those banned for Real-world trading.[4] A day later, a level requirement of 250 total was added after complaints.[5]

Your display name can be changed at any time without changing your email or login credentials. Visit MY PROFILE -> GAME SETTINGS. The name field must contain at least 2 non-space characters separated by a space. Click EDIT to make changes, then click SAVE when you're done.

So I think its safe ti say some people like myself who start their 2 play-through or 3rd or how ever many times have accidentally named their character wrong be in most case misspellings it and being Frustrated to find out that after spending a good time working on that character realizing that their name is misspelled which I'm sure no one like see their name is wrong on the load screen or In conversations. So my question is will Bethesda make it so we can change our names mid game cause I will be honest I don't like role playing a female character name Nate when I meant to give her the name Naoto. so what do you guys/gals think I like hear what other people think cause I'm sure not everyone wants to go and make the same character again just with a different name

he probably talking about The point at which before you exit the vault so if your really far into the game and want to do the game over again then that would work I honestly Think if Bethda does'ent make it spo we can change our names modders will make it possible

Lol D'oh guess I could do that as well though the first couple of times at reaching that point, it would save automatically right at that spot so when you loaded the game you were instantly put into that screen that lets you change everything which was especially handy for different characters. Doesn't seem to do that anymore after i messed with the saves options.

I know what you mean. I take great care to choose a name that fits my characters and pets in video games. I always name my female character in Fallout games "Geneva" and then I noticed there's a minor character in Diamond City with that name. Kinda takes the cachet away from my character. I wanted to rename her "Vienna" but no way to do so that I've found once you're too far into the game, even on PC.

While your username might be perfect, the game is not ready to accept it for some reason. Even if you have been using this username for quite some time across different games. More than usernames, these names tend to become gaming identities and it can be frustrating if you cannot use them. The game does not even allow you to change it as it displays no rename tokens for you to change your name.
