The Gateway Hydrofracking Rig No. 8 is a heavily modified steam injected horizontal hydraulic fracturing rig and is one of the largest, deepest horizontal hydraulic fracturing units ever to operate in the United States. It began operation in late 2013, and is located in Somerset, Pennsylvania, in Susquehanna County, which covers and is home to a population of 753,755, as of the 2010 U.S. Census. Method
The rig is owned by Chesapeake Appalachia, LLC, and is operated by Ensign Energy Inc. of Houston, Texas, through Chesapeake Appalachia, LLC. It is one of the first American hydrofracking rigs to use a shale gas hydraulic fracturing that injects steam and hydraulic fracturing fluid into a shale formation to generate gas.
The rig's steam injection is considered unique because of its length. It uses of of tubing (6/8-inch OD) to carry the steam and hydraulic fracturing fluid at a temperature of. The rig pumps of hydraulic fracturing fluid, containing of proppant and of water into the shale formation at a rate of. History
The Gateway Hydrofracking Rig No. 8 was completed in late 2013 and began operations in January 2014. In March 2014, the rig was moved to a new location and was scaled down to operate for a limited time. In 2015, the rig returned to its original location and gained national attention for breaking all kinds of records for fracturing operations.
